The Spiritual Realm

The following story is from Os Hillman’s TGIF blog (tgif@marketplaceleaders.org).  I read this and chuckled at the amazement that when you follow the voice of God within and follow its instruction with full faith, even though it may challenge the logic of human behavior, amazing things can happen.  Read and enjoy.

“So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind. 1 Corinthians 14:15

How real is the spiritual realm? My lawyer friend from Nigeria tells a personal story of how he was preparing for an important case. He knew that he must be prepared to argue five separate points. He was to appear before his country’s supreme court, so it was a very important case.

As he neared the time in which he was to go to court, he began to pray about how he was to argue the case. He spent much time in legal preparation and intercessory prayer. As he went to court, the Spirit spoke to him and said, “Do not argue point one, point two, point three, or point four. Only argue point five.” Imagine my friend’s struggle of faith. If he were reading this wrong, the shame and professional fallout would be devastating.

The time had come to present the case before the judge when my friend said, “Judge, I wish to withdraw points one through four. I wish to argue only point five.” The opposing counsel stood up and objected. “Your honor, he cannot do that!” “Objection overruled, counsel,” said the judge.

My friend went on to present his case around point five only, and then sat down. When the opposing counsel stood to present his case, he stood speechless for 12 minutes. He could not get a word out of his mouth. He finally mumbled a few words and complained to the judge that he was going to have to yield. It seems that the opposing counsel had prepared to argue only points one through four, but failed to prepare for point five. The judge ruled in favor of my friend.

The unseen Lord wants to help us in the physical realm of our work life. We must acknowledge His presence and tap into this incredible resource He has given to each of us. Seek Him today and ask Him to reveal His perfect plan for you this day.

It can be quite amazing when we choose to rely on our faith in God when the voice or message He is conveying to us seems to go against all common human sense. Yet if we take a “leap of faith” and follow the instruction of His voice we have powerful and amazing outcomes.  So, you might ask, has this ever happened in your life?  The answer is unequivocally YES!

I will share one example of this voice that lead me in some important business and life decisions.  A number of years ago I had a dream where I was working a trade show, but I was representing a company I had no prior knowledge of or use of their products.  But in this dream I was working this business as a sales rep for this company.  It appeared that I was having a good time and enjoying the trade show atmosphere.  I don’t always remember many of my dreams but this one stuck out to me.  I told my dream to my partner and he made the statement that this sounded like a pretty good business idea, working tradeshows for other businesses.  I thought it sounded intriguing but soon forgot all about it.  About a week later I had the exact same dream.  I realized that this was no coincidence.  This was something I needed to pay attention to.  I had been praying to God to help find a new revenue source.  Here was a plausible answer.  Even though no one that I was aware of was doing this I thought I would “take a leap of faith” and see if this was a possible new business idea.  Boy oh boy, not only was this a great business idea I got my first client within days and never had to market or solicit for new clients.  They would see me at the tradeshows and come to me for help in their businesses.  This business flourished for many years.

I can’t even imagine what would have happened if I had just ignored the voice.  For me God speaks in dreams, in written words that create new ideas in my mind, and through words from others.  I have learned that I need to remain open to hearing God’s voice.  If I doubt that what is coming to me may not be His voice, then I ask Him to give me certainty by other “signs”.  He understands I sometimes need to have clarity because I can sometimes be blind or deaf to His voice.  He speaks pretty loud and clear to me because I have asked Him to do so.

Life can become easier to manage and the guidance we can all use is easily obtainable if we are open and desirous of hearing God’s voice.  We just need to ask and then be open to the answers.
