The Giving Heart

I just finished reading a wonderful article in the July 5, 2010 issue of Fortune magazine.  The cover shows Bill & Melinda Gates and Warren Buffet under the heading “The $600 Billion Challenge”.  The story is about the three wealthy individuals goal to create a movement where the super wealthy of this world would commit to providing 50% of their wealth back to charity over their lifetimes or at death.  It is a wonderful and inspiring story which also includes Warren Buffet’s own personal Philantropic pledge for the world to read.

The spirit behind this article brought tears to my eyes.  For it exemplifies the generous heart of giving that everyone should live by.  A good life goes way beyond just seeking the sensual pleasures of our physical and material needs.   It must include a real sense of giving.  Giving is only one half of the law of circulation.  What you give out you get back.  I know many of you will think to yourselves, “Well, yeah, look at the money these folks have, they can afford to give – I would too if I was in their shoes”.  Would you?? Would you really??  If you are not now giving even a couple of dollars to others what makes you think you’d be willing to give hundreds, or thousands (or millions) in the future.

A giving heart is a giving heart.  As Warren Buffet states “This pledge will leave my lifestyle untouched and that of my children as well.  They have already received significant sums for their personal use and will receive more in the future. Some material things makes my life more enjoyable; many, however, would not.  I like having an expensive private plane, but owning a half-dozen homes would be a burden.  Too often, a vast collection of possessions ends up possessing its owner.  The asset I most value, aside from health, is interesting, diverse and long-standing friends.”

A giving heart goes beyond providing monetary gifts or contributions to charity and to the church.  It is the desire to help others in providing your time, your attention, and sometimes your physical muscle power.  I challenge you to think of how you give back to a world that has given you so much.  How can you “up” your giving in either money or time to others in need.  The internal satisfaction you will receive, along with other spiritual gifts that you will see come into your life, are beyond the imagination.

I was studying something else about this on another blog. Interesting. Your perspective on it is diametrically opposed to what I read to begin with. I am still reflecting over the various points of view, but I’m inclined to a great extent toward yours. And no matter, that’s what is so super about modernized democracy and the marketplace of thoughts on-line.I will are available back again.
