Season of Giving

Tis the season of joy, laughter and giving.  When we think of giving as associated with the Christmas and holiday season we often fall into the mindset of giving of gifts – often times of unnecessary spending.  But the giving we should all be addressing is the giving of our spirits.  The giving where it would have the most heartfelt impact.  When we give to others without expecting anything back return – that is the true spirit of holiday giving.   I always love to provide a little something towards this spirit of charitable giving.  But this year I’ve been compelled to do even more.  I want to provide so much more to those that have so much less in their wallets and purses to provide to themselves or to their children.  I was so blessed this year with the ability to have some downtime, even if it was forced due to an unexpected turn of events.  Time to expand my spiritual studies, to get rest and to gain a fellowship with others at a local church that I now attend – Living Hope (  I’ve always believed in giving clothing donations to various entities but this year I was able to donate old favorite coats, and new hats, scarves and gloves to pass onto some one without a home who may have to endure the cold nights on the street.  I was able to provide food staples for some needed families.  I chose to provide toys to several children who may or may not have other gifts coming to them on Christmas day.  These are such simple things but I’ve benefited more by my giving then what those small contributions may do for someone else.

My feeling is that if you are blessed enough to have enough food to keep your belly full, if you have a warm home to keep you safe and comforted, if you have enough money to meet the needs of your household — then you are one of the lucky ones.  There are so many people in our own towns who may not be so lucky — why would we not want to help?

In his book, The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success, Dr. Deepak Chopra writes about the Law of Giving, “The universe operates through dynamic exchange… giving and receiving are different aspects of the flow of energy in the universe.  And in our willingness to give that which we seek, we keep the abundance of the universe circulating in our lives.”

I can attest to this flow of giving.  I see it so often in my own life by the kind acts of others – sometimes strangers to always extend an offer of support or a kindness that I need just when I need it the most.   I am truly blessed by the numbers of dear friends and acquaintances that continue to enrich my life by their kind words or actions.

So if you are feeling sadden or overwhelmed by the stress of the season I would strongly urge you to take a moment and look where you can provide some extra heartfelt giving in your life.  You’ll find you will rekindle the joy of the season by doing some small act of giving without expecting anything back in return.
